Chiraag Bains is Senior Counsel to the Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice. In that capacity, he helps manage the Division’s enforcement and policy work to ensure constitutional policing, prison conditions, and juvenile justice processes. He is a member of the team that investigated and sued Ferguson, Missouri, for unconstitutional police and court practices. In addition, Chiraag manages the Division’s oversight portfolio and helps review its criminal, housing rights, and appellate litigation. Previously, Chiraag was a prosecutor in the Division’s Criminal Section, where he prosecuted police misconduct, hate crimes, and violent interference with access to reproductive health clinics. Chiraag clerked on the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals and the federal district court in Boston. He received his J.D. from Harvard Law School, an M.Phil. in Criminology from the University of Cambridge, and his B.A. from Yale.
